Procedure Mix

A surgery center’s procedure mix will greatly affect its financial viability. More complex procedures are generally reimbursed at a higher level than simple procedures, but must be balanced since they often times consume a larger percentage of the center’s resources. Simpler procedures that can be done quickly can make a significant financial contribution if they are performed in high volumes. 

A large number of the specialties represented in the procedure mix will require more equipment and a more divisively trained staff, both of which can depress margins if there isn’t sufficient volume in all of the specialties.
